Atomic Talk Title: From network tab to automated API test with GenAI

With tight deadlines in backend development, finding time to create API tests is a challenge.

What if you could automatically generate tests from real network traffic? In this talk, I’ll show our current test automation setup in K6 and demonstrate how I leveraged GenAI to generate tests automatically by extracting network calls directly from Chrome’s dev tools. You’ll learn how to turn a GraphQL query into a test, refine prompts for complex cases, and strike the right balance between AI and scripting for scalable, reliable testing. Take away practical insights to elevate your backend test automation process.

Talk Takeaways

  • Discover how to automate backend API tests by capturing network traffic.
  • Learn to generate test scripts from GraphQL queries using GenAI.
  • Understand when to use AI for test generation and when manual scripting is needed for accuracy and reliability.
  • Master techniques for refining AI outputs and prompts to handle complex, nested queries efficiently.
