Atomic Talk Title: Program with GUTs

One of the greatest shifts in modern programming practices has been how programmers across many different domains, languages and environments have embraced unit testing. Good unit testing, however, is more than waving a unit-testing framework at your source. Many testbases suffer from unclear tests, increasing rather than decreasing the maintenance burden, decelerating rather than accelerating the speed of change. In this talk we’ll take a quick look at what good unit tests (GUTs) can look like by walking through an example.

Talk Takeaways

  • One of the most common test smells is to have one test method per method under test
  • Align tests with properties, capabilities, states and scenarios, not methods
  • Tests are best thought of in terms of specification rather than verification
  • Tests can be nested and grouped to communicate commonality
